Business Ramblings – Marketing

RED MT TRAILS WM-458More thoughts about business, this one’s about marketing, or budgeting I guess.  You can view my other ramblings/lessons here.

The common phrase we hear when being pitched a service (in this case an ad) is, “well, it’s $1000. If 5 people bought your item, the ad would pay for itself.” NOPE! I ain’t great at story problems but the above line is a terrible sales pitch.

Here’s how I look at it (easy numbers for easy math):

  • Service/product price is $200.00
  • Expense per service/product is 50% ($100.00)
  • Your marketing budget is 10% of expenses ($10.00)
  • Your annual sales are $100,000.
  • Your annual expenses are $50,000.
  • Annual marketing budget is $5,000.

How many additional products would you have to sell to justify the marketing increase of $1,000?

$20,000. Or, 100 products/or services. IN ADDITION to your current sales. I know, it’s kind of a roundabout way to just say that if the price of an ad is x% of your current marketing budget, you need to expect x% increase in sales.  AS A MINIMUM!

It’s hard to know as a start-up what ads will impact your business best and most. I’m learning.

What shouldn’t surprise me is that this pitch preys on what is so common in today’s way of thinking: it’s never about the bottom line, it’s about the payment plan.

So far my two favorite marketing tools are social media (and actual, OMG I’m going to say it, FACE TO FACE networking) and joining chambers/tourism bureaus, etc. Social media is cheap (which means you need to work harder to cut through all the other fluff) and the chambers/tourism bureaus cost a little to join but provide excellent connections. We’ve benefited from them bringing travel writers to the area, their social media streams, and networking opportunities they offer.

Just a little something rattling around in my head today.

Dash — Informal Horse of the Week

Oh, Dash, beautiful Dash.  He’s our big, red, long-legged love bug. 21 this year, and going strong.

Dash is a big boy with a big motor…and an even bigger heart. A 16-hand sorrel, Dash is an own grandson of the famous barrel racing sire Dash For Cash, and true to his heritage, Dash-A-Splash (his big fancy registered name) was a barrel racing horse for his first 14 years. He raced hundreds of times and won loads of buckles and saddles and money on the rodeo circuit – even winning the state championship 4D Barrel horse in 2012!  He is a true rodeo king!

Nowadays, Dash enjoys the easy life of a seasoned trail horse here on Red Mountain. Always loved and well cared for in his racing career, he’s enjoying the same now – just at a slower speed! With his coppery coat and flaxen mane and tail, Dash always stands out as one of our most handsome gentlemen.

Dash is wonderful with kids and adults and is especially careful with beginner riders.

Caitie and Siobhan — “Informal Horses of the Week”

This week’s “Informal Horse of the Week” is actually a pair of horses.

Caitie and Siobhan  (pronounced “Katie” and “shovaughn”) came to us from an Amish farm back east, when they were 3 years old.  They have the same sire, and their dams (mamas) are full sisters.  We call them “sister-cousins”.

Capitalizing on the bonding nature of horses, the two have been together since they were born (as far as I know) and have worked together as a team all their lives.  They’ve done everything from haying to carriage work, you name it.  They are together so much that they even pee and poop at the same time.  Seriously.

Caitie and Siobhan are “American Spotted Drafts”.  This breed is mostly Percheron, which is a French draft horse, crossed with “something” to produce the spotted coloring.  That “something” is usually a lighter-bred horse with color, like a paint.

The two are very different from each other.  Caitie is a bit of a diva — proud, a bit stubborn, and I think she knows she’s beautiful.  Siobhan is more of a mischief maker — good-natured and always into things.  When working, they help each other out when things get scary.  If something is bothering Caitie on her side of the hitch, she’ll lean against Siobhan for encouragement, and vice versa.

One of my favorite memories of them is last year when we took them to the park for wagon rides.  I’d driven them in all kinds of situations — traffic, machinery, crowds — but wanted to be sure that they had time to settle in at the park.  The rides were at night for a Christmas festival that was very busy with lots of light and activities.  We drove up to the park and the organizer had us set up RIGHT next to some giant bounce houses!  Most horses are pretty suspicious of giant bounce houses, or giant bouncy-noise-making-flapping things in general.  Caitie was not the least bit impressed and was prancing around at the end of the lead rope, snorting at the bounce houses.  Siobhan just stared at them, probably calculating whether they could support her if she jumped into one or not.

It didn’t take long for the girls to settle at all.  Something about putting that harness on really puts them at ease, almost like a security blanket or a thunder shirt.  We hitched them to the wagon and did a couple of dry runs of the course, with two “out-walkers” walking along next to the head of each horse for added safety.

I was so proud of the girls and how quickly they settled, accepting their crazy surroundings and cheerfully getting to work.  We took around 300 guests for tours of the park that night — singing Christmas carols, warming themselves with hot cocoa, and watching the lighted boat parade on the river.

The girls LOVE baths and hate horseflies.

If you do a wagon ride tour with us — whether it’s dinner or a wine-tasting, or you’re here for our Christmas Trees — you’ll probably meet these two sweeties!  Enjoy!

Axel, the “Informal Horse of the Week”

I keep meaning to do blog posts of our “horse of the week” where I give you a bunch of juicy details and endearing photos of one specific horse.  Currently, that’s 14 weeks’ worth of material.  I’m calling it the “Informal” horse of the week series because I’m not that great at sticking to this blogging schedule.  It might be the “Horse of the week” for a couple of weeks before I get to writing about the next one.

This week it’s Axel.  Because it’s the first week and I’m going in alphabetical order.

Axel came to us as a 6 month old, barely-weaned fuzz ball.  We got him in the dead of winter.  Axel belonged to a herd of horses that had been abandoned in Montana in 2010.  They were very well bred quarter horses, apparently.

I started Axel under saddle in 2013 as a 3 year old with Buck Brannaman.  He acted like he was born broke.  He’s been used on the trail rides, he’s worked cattle, been roped off of, and pretty much will do anything you ask.  This year I plan to start jumping with him.

Axel is a character — a stinker and an ornery instigator in the herd.  He never misses a chance to pester Wishbone, the current alpha who outweighs Axel by about double his weight.

Axel loves belly rubs.  Yes.  Really.  He is always ready to ride and wants to be with his humans as much as possible.  He hates trailer rides, but will get in the trailer anyway.  He loves food, annoying other horses, food, being with people, food, and food.  He hates the horse trailer (only when it’s moving), and not getting his way (he just has to learn to live with that!).

If you stop by and see the horses, Axel is easy to spot — he’s probably the one trying to get the other horses to play with him.

Tough Stuff

Doing the right thing sucks sometimes.

Here’s to Nevada:

When we first started our business we began scouring Craigslist and other online groups for suitable horses — older, quiet, calm.  We found an ad for a “free horse” in Roy, Washington.  Posting a horse (or most any other animal) on Craigslist as “free” is pretty much a death sentence for them.  I was hoping I could get to him before the meat buyers did.

The family offering him was nice and upfront about his issues — intermittent lameness in the mountains.  They loved to ride in the mountains and Nevada just wasn’t up for it anymore.  We all agreed he’d probably do well on the gentle terrain on Red Mountain.

Nevada was a stunning red horse with four tall white socks.  He had a cute face with big, soft doe eyes and little fox ears.  An important part of his legacy was how many children he taught — he was a lesson horse, a cowboy camp horse, and was a great boy for youngsters on our trail rides.  It’s safe to say Nevada changed lives.  He was always quiet and kind, and despite his advanced age he had a playful spirit in the herd.

Nevada was one of the first horses in our string, a founding member of our operation.  He was always polite, always a gentleman.  Horses like him are the kind that make people want to ride.

We miss you, buddy.

With heavy hearts we had to release Nevada from his pain and lay him to rest.  Our vet is a wonderful person who helped us make it as peaceful and loving as possible.  I hope we did right by you, Nevada.

Legitimacy

I often feel uncomfortable when people say to or about me that I’ve built Red Mountain Trails, that in some sense I’m the queen bee, boss, or guru of the operation.  It doesn’t feel legitimate.

Is the business my heart and soul, and would it die without me?  Yes and no.  It’s my heart and soul.  It might not die without me, but it would change dramatically.

The reality is (and any entrepreneur who tells you otherwise shouldn’t be trusted), I set a lot of things up for this business, but I also tapped in to a lot of good energy and loyal supporters.  First and foremost would be Jeff.  Without his support and enthusiasm, this thing never would have left the ground.  He was the one who encouraged me in the first place.  I scoffed at the idea at first, believe it or not.

We’ve had a ton of support and assistance in many forms — from our amazing staff, to friends who come and help out when we need it, to business people who advise us, and people who share about us through social media and word of mouth.   We’ve had amazing horses arrive at our doorstep, ready to dote on our guests.  I can call our staff at a moment’s notice to throw together a tour at the last minute and they never let their high standards of customer service slip even a little.  No matter how tired they might be.

It’s an amazing thing.

It feels more like having a business is a creative endeavor engaging the community, rather than a strategic game of number-crunching and market analysis.

So that’s why I feel awkward if people ever refer to me as “boss” or somehow the heart of the operation.  The business is the heart of US.

And it’s a blast.

Thanks!RED MT TRAILS WM-458
