Emily and Suzzie enjoying the sceniery.

Here’s a quick round up of all of the events on Red Mountain, from tasting room hours
and events, places to stay, and places to eat.

A few wineries have switched to winter operating hours, so be sure to call ahead and find out what those hours are!  Also, with the roads being hazardous due to weather, if you’re planning to go out, check with the winery to make sure they’re open that day!

I Can’t Believe the People I Hang Out with!

No kidding.  I am so lucky.

Every year I join this Horsemanship Challenge where the participants sign up at the first of the year and commit to spending 40 hours of horsemanship with one horse over 12 weeks.  With jobs and families and short days and crummy weather, it is darn tough for folks to find that time to spend with their horse.  That’s the “challenge” part of it.

I’m excited about the challenge for a different reason.  You’ve probably heard us say a million times — we believe horses are GOOD for communities.  We are hoping to provide that connection for people who otherwise have no horse connection.  The Northwood Farms challenge is special because it is a community of horse people with no agenda other than support, horsemanship, and connection.

I offered our horses up to our staff in the event they were interested in participating in the challenge.  I hoped that the horses would enjoy an exclusive relationship with one person they could bond with in the off-season.  And if our staff enjoyed it, all the better.

This year, they all joined the challenge!  And dang, they are putting in an impressive showing.  In freezing rain, snow, wind, you name it, they are out here riding.

The thing with horses is that you can feed them carrots, scratch their ears and dote on them for hours a day and all you’ll have is a pushy horse begging for treats.  But somehow, just by spending time with them, we can change the relationship.  I’ve seen it too many times to count.  Spending time with a horse is what makes the difference between them being hard to catch vs. walking up to you in a field.  Spending time with them makes the difference between them being upset or stable.  Spending time with horses can even change their status in the herd!

What does spending time with horses do for us?  I think the benefits are too numerous to count, and among them is, “they bring us closer to amazing people.”

Thanks, team, for loving the horses and being part of our dream!

Seriously Lacking in Creativity for a Title for This Post

I think I’ll name this post “Bob”.  I just can’t think what else to call it.  “Random end-of-year-ramblings and OMG LOOK A SQUIRREL!!!” would be appropriate.

Axel is always trying to tell wishbone who's boss. Wishbone could care less.

Axel is always trying to tell wishbone who’s boss. Wishbone could care less.

It’s one of those times where I need to reflect on the last year and write down my thoughts, but also to plan the upcoming year and get it all sorted out.  Meanwhile, I have this food hangover and the day-to-day business of life to tend to.

And sleep.  Sleep would be nice.  Whenever I try, I think of all the stuff I need to write down, plan, and eat.  Thanks a lot, brain.

Hopefully you saw the link to our survey.  We are giving away some great things — wagon ride dinners, trail rides, etc.  You just have to fill in the survey, include your name and email, and you are automatically entered into a drawing.  PLUS!!! You will feel great about the awesome impact you have on a service we provide.  I mean, you have the chance to customize it to be something you’d enjoy, EVEN MORE.

The survey is located at http://goo.gl/forms/Z2dkR3fSE3.

If you haven’t filled it out, I’d sure appreciate your feedback if you did.  Oh, and “free stuff”.  🙂

It’s “That Time”!

Time for some of the great classic movies of our childhood (Charlie Brown Christmas), some new classics (Elf), and if anybody asks I’ll deny it but I’ll tell you because we’re friends: I introduced my husband to the movie “Bad Santa” this year.
Not so sure that was a good idea…
