Whatever Floats Your goat

Whatever Floats Your goat

Happy Easter!   You know what goes great with Easter dinner?  Red Mountain wine!  I love a Riesling with ham, and Kiona and Cooper both make fabulous Rosés that I think go wonderfully with lamb.  Really, the key to wine pairing is “whatever floats your goat.”

I’m not sure what wine pairs well with Easter eggs or deviled eggs.

Another beautiful day in paradise!

Bookings are coming in for wagon rides and trail rides already!  We are so excited to see you all soon!  We took the Bonny Lasses (our team of black and white American Spotted Draft mares) out for a Sunday drive and they were sure driving nicely.  I love the sound of their hooves on the road as we trot along.

Holy Green Grazing, Batman!  I need to turn the horses out on pasture to keep up with the growth around here!

Red Mountain Roundup 2/25/16 – 3/2/16

Greetings from Red Mountain!

What a beautiful stretch of weather we’ve had.  I’ve planted my tomato and pepper seeds indoors in preparation for the garden.  I can’t wait!  One of my favorite summer smells is that strange, skunky smell of fresh tomatoes.

We have to plant a lot of tomatoes because my father and Jeff both like to graze the garden.  Dad lives close by and rides his four-wheeler right into my garden, pulls salt and pepper shakers out of his pocket, wedges the corner of a paper towel into his shirt for a makeshift bib, and starts eating tomatoes.

One year the garden wasn’t producing to meet his demands.  I came home to find he’d left a box of “Miracle Grow – Tomatoes” on my front porch.  Just his subtle way of letting me know to increase production, I guess.

Until the garden is ready, we’ll have to just taste wine, huh?

Here’s a quick round up of all of the events on Red Mountain, from tasting room hours and events, places to stay, and places to eat.

A few wineries are on their winter operating hours, so be sure to call ahead and find out what those hours are!  If you’re planning to go out, check with the winery to make sure they’re open that day!

Places to Eat

There are a number of chain restaurants around but here are some “off the beaten path” recommendations:

    • Tacos Garcia Taco Truck — West Richland.  The best taco truck around, and I love their ceviche.
    • The Wild Boar Grill — Benton City.  This is a new and very welcome addition to the area.  I’m a big fan of their pig wings and homemade potato chips!

In Case You Ever Wonder What Breakfast is Like Around Here

I’ve always loved everything about feeding time — the sounds, the herd dynamics and interactions, the exercise.  Thought I’d share it with you in this video.

Yukon is the first horse I feed, he gets Equine Senior as it’s more palatable to him.  The rest of the horses get alfalfa/grass mix.  We used to feed big round bales of grass and I could put enough out at once to last them a week.  However, with the drought on the west side last year and grass hay in short supply, we switched to local grass/alfalfa mix.  It’s about twice as expensive and even with netting over it the horses tend to consume it too quickly so we’re back to feeding twice daily.  It’s alright, I do enjoy communing with them.

Izzy is at the end of the video and is still working on her manners at feeding time.  Like the horses, she needs to wait until I put her feed out and move away before she can dive in.

Enjoy, and happy Friday!
